Hi,

I am making a final rehearsal for tomorrow Herzelinux wireless lecture; this lecture
is part of a series of six lectures I gave in Haifux (Haifa Linux user group)
in the recent two years, about advanced Linux kernel networking.
http://tuxology.net/herzelinux/

Slides are available here:
http://tuxology.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/wirelessLecHerzelinux.pdf

Two of this lectures were given also in Herzelinux, and tomorrow is the
third one. There is no need for attending previous lectures to understand
tomorrow wireless lecture.

I learned a lot while preparing the lectures,
and it seems to me that the attenders of these lectures enjoyed.

I am musing with the thought of "forking" to yet another Linux kernel lecture series,
this time about Linux filesystems , starting with jffs, ext4, ....

Why I call it "forking"? because the Linux kernel networking series is not
finished yet ( I am preparing future lectures in this series).

Hi,
Michael Kerrisk, the man pages maintainer, is writing a book of about 1500 pages about Linux/Unix kernel-userland interface and C library (glibc) functions.

see: http://linux-man-pages.blogspot.com/

Seems that this book might be helpful and needed. Alas, it will be published only in 2010.

There was a great lecture today in Haifa Linux User group about KSM,
"KSM and the art of memory management".
KSM is taken seriously by the Linux Kernel folks and it is soon to be merged in
the Linux kernel. The lecture was given by
Izik Eidus of RedHat, Israel (formerly Qumranet). It was some kind of a
special interactive lecture (no slides at all!) with many questions and answers from the
crowd; it was fascinating and highly interesting!

Android

  • May. 8th, 2009 at 12:44 AM
I have attneded this evening an excellent lecture about Android (http://code.google.com/android/) , given
by Gilaad Ben Yossef in Herzelinux. (http://tuxology.net/herzelinux/).

The first part dealt with historical background, softwared development
and the Android framework, java in Android, and more.

The second part was a real example of code written in Java and an emulator
for this code. At the end there were many questions and a discussion
with people in the crowd.

The lecture was videoed, and hopefully the video will be available soon on the
web for those who missed it.

Gillad mentioned a wide variety of applications for the Android;
the one that I liked most was the magnometer...

git repositories and vfat

  • Apr. 30th, 2009 at 9:05 AM
Hi,

Something strange had occurred to me with a git repository: I copied a full Linux kernel git
repository to a USB DiskOnKey. The DiskOnKey was with vfat filesystem.
Then I copied from the DiskOnKey to a Linux machine ext3 partition (This machine
is running F10; I mention that it is with ext3 simply because you can install
F10 with ext4 non-bootable partitions, in condition that you specify
a corresponding boot parameter). Now, it seems that somehow this process of
copying is troublesome for git repositories. The reason is that  when I tried "git log"
on the new machine I get an error saying that this is not a git repository
(And by the way, "git diff" shows some other error, telling something else, but
probably this is a different bug in git). I also made sure that the problem is not
with permissions.
Than I made sure that "git log" and "git diff"
on the original machine worked correctly. And than I tried formatting the
USB DiskOnKey with ext3 (using mkfs.ext3). I repeated the same process.
Now both "git log" and "git diff" on the new machine works OK.
I am fiddling with the thought of
hacking and fixing this problem. (and also trying it with other filesystems
on the DOK, like ntfs).

A new firewall for Linux

  • Apr. 23rd, 2009 at 10:45 AM
Hello,
There is a new firewall for Linux under development, called nftables, which
is going to replace iptables in the future.

nftables is a new packet filtering engine; there will be a new user space
code which will replace the existing one.

A first patch was realesed by Patrick McHardy in 18.3.2009:

3 Israelis is ols 2009

  • Apr. 21st, 2009 at 5:13 PM
Hello,
It seems that the number of Israelis taking part in OLS is rising; in 2009, there will be 3 Israelis there:
Gilad Ben-Yossef, Arnon Gilboa , and Moshe Roffe. Hope in next years this will continue like this. We may be
proud.

moving to KDE

  • Feb. 9th, 2009 at 8:44 AM
Hi,
I had always used gnome as a Desktop manager; however, I consider seriously moving to KDE.
I had heard about Klipper and other KDE interesting apps; maybe it is worth to try?

A Linux Hero

  • Jan. 29th, 2009 at 10:15 PM
Hello,
First, I wish Val Hansen, a Linux fs kernel expert, to recover soon from the surgery! we are
waiting her e2fsprogs
ext4 file system patches and other patches!

see:
http://valhenson.livejournal.com/33756.html

Second, I don't know why, but when I read her blog about typing with one hand after the surgery,
it reminded of an Israeli hero who is regarded as a national hero; he lost his hand in a battle , but he fought afterwards in a very famous battle.

Zvi Dvir struggle

  • Dec. 7th, 2008 at 8:48 AM
Hello,
Recently an interesting news item was published: (hebrew)
http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-3632367,00.html

For non-hebrew readers:
This news item tells about that Zvi Dvir had bought a laptop with Windows on it.
He claimed that he does not use Windows and he some money back due to it. This was only
after he appealed to court.

I wish that many will follow him, and that all stores in Israel (and across the globe) will be enforced to
sell PC/laptops with specifying the options that the buyer can purchase them without buying
any operating systems.
